Writing Assessment Review

Today in WGA we are reviewing our writing assessment from terms 1 and 4. We looked at what our rubric score is and saw what we have to improve on. Before we looked at the rubric score we had to reread our writing. The seven things you can score on are our ideas, structure, organisation, vocabulary, sentence, punctuation and spelling. I scored 4 for ideas, 4 for structure, 5 for organisation, 4 for vocabulary, 5 for sentence, 5 for punctuation and 5 for spelling.  

My next steps to getting better at writing would be looking at my structure, vocab and also my ideas. How I will work on my next steps is by looking at some words I can put instead so a word, strengthen my ideas. and also put my sentences in the right paragraph or right place. 

Creative Writing

Today in wga we are doing creative writing. We are following along with the teacher. The photo is of a snowy forest with houses and Christmas decor. It's been a while since we did creative writing with the teacher. Here is my writing and the photo.


As the dark sky blooms the stars of the night start to shine through the tall trees. The light of the house glows making the stars and trees shine more than the sun. As I look around more the snow starts to turn to ice as the trees are filled with snow. The people start to come out of their house, the snow starts falling and the Christmas tree starts to shine. 

The people sit down on the deck in their Christmas outfits. Each of the people has different things on their top and pants, it could be reindeers, snow falling, reefs and maybe Santa with Mrs Claus. A reindeer comes outside with a plate on its back. On the plate, there are cookies and also hot cocoa on the plate.

As the reindeer is going to the people he falls. The people rush to pick up the glass but then some of them get glass in their hands. The people get up and put bandages on their hands. The poor reindeer has hot cocoa all over him.

Most of the people rush to the kitchen to get wet paper towels. The other people run to the reindeer to try to calm him down. Even though he is calm, he is just sitting there waiting for the people to get off him. When the people finally get off him, he gets up and walks to the snow. When he is at the snow, he rolls in it to get the cocoa off him. 

Tongan Language Week

 For the past week in wānanga, we have been looking at Tongan language week. The reason why we are doing it this week and not last week is because we didn't have enough time and the teachers didn't have anything for us to do. We have to make a slideshow with our work on it. Our teacher sent us a slideshow with what we have to do on it. Here is the work I did.

Litmus Paper

 Today in science we are looking at litmus paper.

Litmus is a tree lichen fungi and is made into small paper strips or a liquid for testing acids or alkalines.

1. Blue litmus paper determines if something is acidic. It turns red in solutions with a pH less than 7.

2. Red litmus paper determines if something is alkaline. It turns blue in solutions with a pH greater than 7.

Litmus experiment:

Materials:
1. Red litmus paper
2. Blue litmus paper
3. Sodium hydroxide
4. Hydrochloric acid
5. pipette
6. 4 test tubes

Steps:
1. Rip the litmus paper in half and put half in each test tube.
2. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid to the red litmus paper in test tube 1.
3. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid in the blue litmus paper in test tube 2.
4. Add 3 drops of sodium hydroxide to the blue litmus paper in test tube 3.
5. Add 3 drops of sodium hydroxide to the red litmus paper in test tube 4.

Findings:

The blue litmus paper with hydrochloric acid went red
The red litmus paper with hydrochloric acid went didn't change
The red litmus paper with sodium hydroxide went blue. The water went yellow
The blue litmus paper with sodium hydroxide went didn't change.

Conclusion:
Blue litmus is an acidic
red litmus is alkaline.

Dogs - Puppies

 For the past 2 and a half weeks, Me and my family have been looking after 7 puppies. The reason why we are looking after 7 puppies is because my 2 dogs had them. My dogs are chocolate labradors. One of my dogs is skinny, very tall and dopey. My other dog is big and small but fast. Since the puppies are 2 and a half weeks old they are starting to walk and most of them have their eyes open wide. All of the puppies are chocolate. There are 2 runts out of all of them. Here is a photo of the puppies.

Parihaka

 Yesterday in Nga Tangata we started looking at Parihaka. We had to read 3 articles about Parihaka. We had to make a copy of a slideshow and do our work on there. Here is my work.

Science - Acids and Bases

 Today in Science we are looking at acids and bases. 

What makes something acid?
An acid contains Hydrogen atoms that break off to react with a substance.

What are 3 examples/names of acids:
Hydrochloric Acid
Sulfuric Acid
Nitric Acid
Citric Acid
Acetic Acid
Formic Acid
Carbonic Acid

What is an acid?

An acid (HA) is a solution that breaks into H+ and A-

Aim: To make red cabbage pH indicator for use on different household chemicals


Red Cabbage indicator

Materials:
1. Red cabbage
2. Beaker
3. Bunsen Burner
4. Pipette
5. Sodium Hydroxide
6. Test tubes
7. Paper towels
8. Test tube rack
9. water
10. Hydrochloric acid

Steps:
1. Chop up the cabbage into small pieces. Place beaker and cover 
2. Bring the solution to boil using a bunsen burner and then turn the heat off. Let it sit to cool down.
3. Pour cabbage water through a paper towel into a beaker. The dark purple liquid in the jar is the pH indicator liquid.
4. Suck up the indicator into a pipette
5. Use the cabbage indicator and the pH chart below to test the acidity of the different 3 household liquids plus the hydrochloric acid and ammonium hydroxide.

Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori

 Today in Tuhura we are doing cybersmart. For cybersmart we are celebrating Maori language week. We had to go onto a site. On that site we have to sign up for the movement. After we sign up we have to make a DLO about Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. I did the DLO on canva. Here is the DLO. 

It Is Important That Year 7-8 Do Friday Sport

 Today in Te Ao Whanui we have been given another statement. The statement is it is important that year 7-8 do Friday sport. If you don't know what Friday sport is it is sports that happens every Friday. You can choose what sport you want to do. You have to write if you agree or disagree and why. Here is my writing. 

I think that it is important that year 7 and 8s do Friday sport. One of the reasons I think it is important is that you need to exercise each week. Even if you do sport in the weekend it is still important to do some sport in school. It is good that you do a different sport on Fridays at school than the one you do in the weekend. It is also good that you do at least 3 or more hours of sport each week. Another one of the reasons is because people are overwhelmed with school work and they need some times to let the energy out.

Friday sport is something that lots of schools should do. Why I think that lots of schools should do that is because if they don't have PE that term they can still get some exercise in. I also think that a group of year 9 - 13s each week should also do Friday sport. It should be a different group of year 9 - 13s each week and do a different sport as well. One of the reasons I think that year 9 - 13s should do it is because if they didn't choose PE as a subject. 

Music - Orchestras

 Yesterday in music we started learning about Orchestras. Today we had to research orchestras and make a slideshow or whatever we want to use. We got given questions to answer on the slideshow. Here is the slideshow I made.

Student Summit

Today I went over to Hornby Primary School to present and do some workshops for the student summit. For the student summit, I worked and presented with Alexia. The thing we choose to present was canva. I wasn't very nervous presenting but Alexia was. The presentation went very well. There were more people than I expected. Miss Tozer the teacher we went with made the students that were in the workshop send their work to her. Once they shared their work with her, she chooses some out and shares it on the tv. The reason we choose to do canva is because we have used it lots and it is very easy to use. My favourite part was when the students were working and we were looking at their work. The things I choose to do were creative coggleing and wedeo/wevideo. I didn't know what coggle was but when I was at the workshop I knew what it was. Coggle is a website that you can make mind maps on. I didn't also know what wedeo/wevideo was until we were at the workshop and I realised that I have used it before. If you don't know what student summit is. it's when different schools from the same cluster come together in one place and share what they have been working on during the time. People get to choose if they want to present and then share it with over kids. They could also choose to do some workshops. Before you present it you have to make a slide or something else that explains what the website or tool you are sharing is, how to use it, what it does.  On the slideshow you make you can put examples of what you can do on it. OREO Meaning

In Te Au Whanui we have started doing writing. We are doing persuasive writing. Our teacher told us what OREO means. OREO is used in persuasive writing. Since I have finished my work I had to do the fast finish. The fast finish was to make a DLO about OREO. Here is my DLO.

Needs Writing

 Yesterday in Te Ao Whanui we started doing a need invention writing. The need invention I choose was clothes. Yesterday we also learnt about OREO. The Os in OREO stands for opinion. The R in OREO stands for reason. The E in OREO stands for example/evidence. Our teacher also read us another person essay that had 5 paragraphs. Here is my writing. 
Let’s talk about clothes. Clothes were first invented between 114,00 and 30,000 years ago. In the olden days, they used animal skin to make clothes. The animal skin was also used to make shoes and tunic. Another thing that they used in the olden days was leaf type stuff and fur. Now let’s talk about why you need clothes to survive. One of the reasons you need clothes is to keep you warm when it is cold. Also one of the reasons why you need clothes is to keep your body covered (private parts). If your body parts are not covered it can make it easier for people to harass you. One of the positives of not having clothes is making you less insecure. Then also with clothes people can make them feel less insecure with what they are wearing. There are different types of clothing. For example, something to keep you not saturated is jackets and pants. In winter you need jackets and pants to keep you warm. Unlike in summer, some types of clothes don’t cover as much body as winter clothes do. Some of the clothes are crop tops, shorts, tops, tank tops, skirts, dresses and more. There are more types of clothing. As you see there are many types of clothing. How would you feel if you didn’t have any clothes? If you didn’t have clothes would you kill an animal and use the skin for clothes. This is why I think we need clothes to survive.

Ice cream Is Better Than Cake

 Today in Te Au Whanui we are doing another persuasive writing. The topic for this period is ice cream is better than cake. Here is my writing.

I agree that ice cream is better than cake. The reason I think that ice cream is better than cake is that cake is boring and plain. Unlike ice cream has different flavours and it mixes well with lots of things. One of the things I think is good with cake is ice cream. Ice cream is really nice with cake but it depends on the type of it. One of my favourite flavours of cake is ice cream or really nice chocolate. Some of my favourite flavours of ice cream are cookies n cream, churros, chocolate chip, caramel and more. Then are just some of my favourite flavours but there is more. One of the things I like about cake is when there is stuff on to like cream and fruits. I also like when the cake is coloured because it makes it not so boring and plain. Some of the things I like with ice cream is cream and fruit. When you mix ice cream and cream together it makes it like a runnier texture. This is why I think ice cream is better than cake.

Persuasive Writing

Today in Te Ao Whanui we are looking at persuasive writing. We have been given a statement which is cats are better than dogs. Now that we have been given a statement we have to write about why we agree or disagree with it or not. Here is the writing I did. 

I disagree with this statement I think dogs are better than cats. The reason I think that dogs are better than cats is that dogs do lots more stuff. There can be some cats that do stuff but they don't do much. There are lots of things you can do with dogs. For example, you can take dogs on a walk and play fetch with them.When you walk the dog you also get exercise. Sometimes people take cats on a walk but not much. Most of the time cats are just laying around or they are at a different person house. Unlike cats, dogs play with each other and are all hyper. This is why I think dogs are better than cats.

Gummy Bears Osmosis

Aim:

I want to find out what happens to Gummy Bears when we put them into different liquids.

Prediction:

I think that the Gummy Bears will absorb the liquids.

Method:

  

Equipment:

• Three solutions - water, sugar and salt

• Four Gummy Bears of the same colour

• Two Petri Dishes

• Marker pen

• Electronic Balance

• Measuring Cylinder

• Beaker

Steps

1. Get your equipment.

2. Put on your safety glasses

3. Label Petri dishes with DRY, WATER, SALTWATER, SUGAR WATER

4. Weigh the Gummy Bears and record their weight on the Petri Dish.

5. Add 40mL of the solution into the Petri dish.

Maths DLO

For the past few weeks, we have been doing angles. We had to do a DLO about how we solve angles around a point, on a straight line and in a triangle. I made my DLO on biteable so it was easier to do. 

Culture Kete

Yesterday we started a new kete. The kete is about culture. We got given some words to find out the definition for. Here is the DLO.

 

CHD And ASD

For the past week we have been doing research about Mental Health. I did my research about ASD and CHD. We had to make a DLO about the research we found. We got linked to limited websites. I did my DLO on slides because its simple and its easy. We had to add a graph on to the DLO for the statistics in maths. Here is my DLO.
