Today in Nga Tangata we are still looking at Parihaka. We have been looking at Parihaka since last week. We have to do some vocab. The vocab words are confiscate, Te whiti, Tohu, Peacefull protest, Te Raukura Feather. After we do the vocab we have to do flash cards. To do the flash card we get a piece of paper that has 4 puzzle pieces on it. On the puzzle pieces we put stuff from the flash card on it. When we are finished doing the flash cards we have to cut out the puzzle pieces to make a feather. After we do that we have to take a photo of the feather and make a blog about what we did today. Here is the vocab and a photo of the feather.
Confiscate: Taking someones stuff with authority.
Te Whiti: Te Whiti is a person and they were a leader.
Tohu: Tohu is a person and they were a leader.
Peaceful Protest: Peaceful protest is a protest without harming people.
Te Raukura Feather: Ta Raukura is a feather that means hope, faith, spiritual power.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 7 and in 2021 I will be a year 8. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Reading - MeMe & Me
The main points of the story are Nina gets a phone, she gets a friend called MeMe. MeMe is very rude to her. At the end, Nina gets trapped in the phone and MeMe is now in her body. MeMe looks like Nina.
MeMe is a person on the phone who looks like Nina. MeMe is a person who is friends with Nina. We think MeMe is a robot.
There is a possibility that this can happen in real life but I don't think it will. The reason why I think at it will not happen in real life is because there is lots of things that are like this already.
I don't know what the author is trying to tell us.

Women Suffrage - tic tac toe
Yesterday in Nga Tangata we started looking at women suffrage. The group I am in has to read 3 articles about Kate Sheppard. After we read the articles we have to do an activity. The activity is a tic tac toe(do 3 in a row). I asked my teacher if I could do a Kahoot with my friend about women suffrage and Kate Sheppard. The other tasks I did were list 2 things you're learnt from the text and your opinion about the text. Here is the work I did(not the kahoot).

Women Suffrage
Today in Nga Tangata we are learning about women suffrage and Kate Sheppard. I have learnt about women suffrage before. We looked at some videos about Kate Sheppard. After we watched the videos we shared back with the teacher. Then after sharing with the teacher we have to define some words in our own words. After we did that we have to do a comprehension. The comprehension is about women suffrage. After we read the article it came with we have to answer some questions. Here are the definitions and the answers to the questions.
Definitions:
Parliament: Parliament means a group of people in the government.
Suffrage: Suffrage means wanting the right to vote.
Convince: Convince means trying to make someone do something/agree.
Prohibitionist: Prohibitionist is someone who prohibition.
Answers:
The year that Maori men could vote is in the 1867s.
The reason why men thought women should not vote is because they thought they should be in the kitchen, keeping the house clean and looking after the kids. Another reason why they thought women should not vote is because they thought women should stay home and cook
The statement drinking their wages means that the men would go out the spend their wages on alcohol.
The WCTU help the poor by visiting hospitals, prisons and also setting up a soup kitchen to help men not spend their wages on alcohol.
The main forms that they used in their protests were giving out newspapers, leaflets had meetings and also held huge protest gatherings with inspiring speeches.
The reason why she is on our 10$ note is so we can remember her and what she did.

Springbok Comprehension
Today in Nga Tangata the group I am in have to do a reading comprehension. The comprehension is about the Springbok tour. After we read the article that it came with, we have to answer some questions. Here are the answers to the questions. Another word for apartheid is separatism. The reason why they wore helmets is because the police used special long batons. I think that they were upset that they were called honourary white is because it is offensive. The game in hamilton was cancelled because there was a big group of protesters that stormed the grounds. I think that the protests were successful because the tour didn't go on. The reason why I think that the New Zealand protests helped Nelson Mandela was because he was going to be the next president.

Math Problem Solving - Tia and Tom
Today in Maths we did a solving question, we had to work with someone else or with two other people.
We had to work out how long will it be before Tia has more money than a tom, we thought it would be easier if one of us would do tom and the other one would do Tia. I did Tom and Alexia did Tia.
Since Tom started spending his $20 on Monday but only using $2 a day, While Tia started work on Monday and made $2.50 a day. We started working it out and stopped on Friday. On Friday tom had $10 and Tia had $12.50 So it will take 5 days for Tia to make more money than Tom.

Hero Writing
On Wednesday we started writing about our hero. The story could be real or fake. I choose to do a real story. The hero I choose to do was my Dad because the past week has been a bit sad for him. I thought this would be good to write about because my great Granddad is also dead and my Dad can't get over there because of covid. The story contains death in it. Here is the story.
It was the middle of the holidays. Everyone was going out to different places. The day was calm and people out walking their dogs. I was just sitting in my room on my chromebook watching youtube. Soon my Dad got a phone call from my Nana. I paused my video because I am a nosey kid. As soon as my Dad started talking I knew it was something bad. My Dad and Nana were talking for a long time. It has been about a half-hour since they called and I haven’t heard anything since then.
It has been about 1 hour since the call and my Dad called us down to the lounge. When we got down to the lounge my Dad started talking. He said, “Okay so Nana called me and uh said that the hospital called her about Nana(Great Nana) and uh she has passed.” I asked him if he knows what time she died. After a couple of minutes, he finally replied that she died at about 11:30 there time so 1:30 our time. Since they live in Australia they are behind us in time. My Nana was not there when she died because she was in Melbourne or Brisbane but she got there the next day.
Soon its night time and my family decided to come to my house and have a video call with our Nana. We even got to Rose, my auntie. The people that came were my uncle Aj, my other uncle Daniel, my auntie Christine and my big sister Katelyn with her baby Sienna. I wasn’t down there at the start but I was down there later. Everyone got a turn to talk to her. Since this has happened my Dad has been taking the week of work. My Father even got the kitten that our uncles place because it got dumped by its mother.
The funeral is later next week. It is going to be live-streamed because we can’t get over there because of covid and quarantine. After the funeral, she is going to get cremated like our Granddad(Great Granddad) did.

Who Is Your Hero

Greta Thunberg - Heros
Yesterday we started a new topic but it's still about heroes. Our new topic is Earth Day and Greta Thunberg. Yesterday we had to read an article, watch a video and if we think we can do more we read a bigger article. If you were not here yesterday you had to just read the article and watch the video. Today we had to create something. Since I am in the superman group we could have chosen to do a canvas poster about Greta or write a persuasive paragraph about why we think she is a hero. I choose the persuasive paragraph. Here is the paragraph.
I think Greta Thunberg is a hero because she is trying to change the way the climate is. To some people she is not a hero but that the way they think. There is a lot of reasons why I think Greta is a hero. One of the reasons is that she is trying to change peoples minds about what kids think. I think it is very cool to see someone with a syndrome speak out about something and not get ashamed about what she is saying or that if people think that she is stupid by speaking out. There are some down things about what she did, like dropping out of school and leaving her friends but she did that for a change.
She did one of her speech at the United Nations COP24 in Katowice. She was 15 years old when she gave that speech. She has also given speeches at other places. Her most famous speech was Climate Action Summit "You have stolen my dreams, and my childhood, with your empty words. And yet I'm one of the lucky ones,". Most people listened to her because they realised something that they should have realised before she had to speak out. The awards she won was time person of the year, Glamour Award for The Revolutionar, Right Livelihood Awar, Shorty Award for Best in Activis, Rachel Carson PrizeInternational, Children's Peace Prize, Ambassador of Conscience Award and Nordic Council Environment Prize.
This is how I know that she is a hero.

Letter To Jacinda Ardern
Today since I finished all of my work I had to write a letter to Jacinda Ardern. I was writing a letter to her because one of the tasks to write a letter to her. Here is my letter to Jacinda Ardern.
Dear Jacinda Ardern
My name is Carla and I am from Hornby High in Christchurch.
I am writing to you to tell you why I think women day is important and what I think about it.
I think women’s day is important because it is important to celebrate the day women got to
vote and have more freedom. Women’s day is important because it is the only time we get
to celebrate the women of our country. If Kate Sheppard never did anything we would of not
might have been able to vote. Ladies still would probably be in the house doing everything
around the house while the men get to get out of the house, work and meet new people.
I am glad that Kate Sheppard called out and said “that us women need to vote” because if not
life would probably still be very sexist.
Sincerely Carla

Women's Suffrage Movement
Today in reading my group Superman had to read about women suffrage. The book was called The Fight To Vote. After we read that we have to write a paragraph about women's suffrage. I asked my teacher if I could change it so my writing was still about women's suffrage but it was like I am writing about my experience. Here is my writing.
Women's Suffrage haves been going on for a long time. I was one of the people who were marching along the street yelling to make a change in the world. I remember going out for a walk one day and going to other people houses and asking the ladies inside what they do all day and I only remember hearing that all they would be in the kitchen or in the garden or cleaning the house. Personally, I thought that was really unfair. I was not allowed to vote for a long time. I felt like we had no power and all we were made for was to stay in the house. I was so glad when we could vote because I felt like we had more power and that we weren't just meant for the kitchen. I love the new system. It was personally one of the big things that happened to me. I remember being let to vote for the first time in my life.

My Letter To A Sportsperson
For the past couple of weeks, we have been doing sports heroes. We had to do a letter to our sports heroes but before we did that we had to make a sports profile of our hero and write about why we think they are a hero. I tried to make the letter have a bit of info about him and why I think he is my sports hero. Here is my writing.
Monday 8 March 2021
Dear, Mr Malcolm
My name is Carla and I am a student at Hornby high. In school for the last few weeks, we have been doing some work on sports heroes. We did profiles on a person we think is a hero. I chose you as my sports hero because you are inspiring to me.
Over the last two week, we had to learn about our favourite sports heroes. I was impressed that you can drive two sports car and you can change from a non-contact sports car to a contact sports car and also not forget that you are in a non-contact sports car. I thought that it would be hard to have two sports cars but you now changed that with you having two sports cars and one of them being contact and the other one being non-contact.
I was really impressed by your sporting achievements. There are lots of sporting achievements that I could talk about with people and they would not have a clue what I’m talking about. I remember going to Nelson to watch the PTS Superstock Stampede and seeing you race and letting other people win the Stampede.
Thanks for being my Sports Hero.

The Children's War Task
Last week in reading we had to read a book called The Children's War. After we read the book we had to task to do. The task was like the game bingo because you had to do the task and then you mark it off and you had to do 3 different tasks to make a bingo. Here is my work.
An interesting fact that I found was that the children got lots of money and they gave it to the
red cross and to the poor kids which were pretty kind of them because they could have just
kept the money.
My opinion of the book was that it was boring but there were some interesting things in the
story.
I learnt that children had a lot of responsibility then what children have now and that it is easier
to get money than it is now.

Our Hero
Last week on Friday we had to do an activity where we write about our hero/s. Each group had to do something different but each group is still writing the same topic. My group that I am in had to do 2-3 paragraphs. I did two different people because I can't do 2 paragraphs about one person because I don't have much ideas about the person. For my heros/people I did my Mum and my big Sister. Their names are Rachel and Katelyn. Here are my two paragraphs about my heros/people.
My hero is my Mother, her name is Rachel. She is my hero because she gave birth to me and looks after me. My Mother likes to watch racing and rugby with me(so does all of my family). My Mother leaves me alone and lets me do what I want most of the time. She likes to try and be funny most of the time when we get home or when she gets home. My Mum worries about me if she is going away the next day. Rachel likes to give me the food I like in my lunch.
My other hero is my Sister, her name is Katelyn. She is my hero because she made a beautiful child. She is also my hero because she is looking after me for 3 days and is taking me and my sister to the movies and we are going to see The Little Things while she is going to the movies. She lets us play Mario kart 8 deluxe on her Nintendo. Her child's name is Sienna and she is very cute and funny. Katelyn likes to let us do what we want most of the time when we are at her house and lets us look after Sienna. Katelyn likes to play touch but is not playing much because she has to look after Sienna.

3. 16,000 New Zealanders died and 41,000 were wounded.

Following Gold
I think the poem is telling you a story about the way to go to get gold. I think they are feeling curious about what's going to happen next. I think this is meant to tell you that it is an adventure.
