Bacteria

Today in science we are learning about bacteria. We watched two videos telling us about bacteria.  Bacteria is good and bad because it helps you in different ways. Bacteria looks like a rod or spiral shape. Bacteria is inside your cells. 90% of bacteria is in your cells.

Walt:
To look at different types of bacteria.

What is bacteria?

1. Feeding:
Most bacteria are consumers, this means they cant use the sun to make their own food, which means why to have to feed by using other living things. Bacteria do not have a digestive system likes other things. Bacteria will wait for things to decompose before they eat them. They start to eat it when it is rotten.

2. Reproduction:
With bacteria, there is no women or male. The name for the way they reproduce is mitosis.  One bacteria does not need another bacteria to reproduce. They make more bacteria by constantly splitting when they need to. They can split every 15 - 20 minutes. The smaller cells are named daughter cells which means they will become identical, it will be the same colour and look the same.  They will stop splitting when they stop getting food.

3. Excretion:
The food bacteria eat is important which helps them survive. It gives them energy and helps them grow.  Exceritions also helps them repair parts and damage parts. There is also waste products of their digestion.  These wastes must be excreted or got rid of so that the bacteria do not poison themselves. They pass out through the bacterium's cell membrane, and into whatever they are living on or in. Bacteria feed on living things and causes diseases and are called pathogenic bacteria and they are harmful.

4. Breathing:
All different types of living things need oxygen so their cells can convert food into energy. The process is called preparation. Bacteria can carry out both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration is when there is plenty of oxygen. Anaerobic respiration occurs when the supply of oxygen is very limited or non-existent.
