Te Ao Whanui

Today in Te Ao Whanui we have to do a reflection blog. Te Ao Whanui is about reading. Each term there is a new module. Last term in Te Ao Whanui we did our heroes. This term we are doing changing the world. For the past week in Te Ao Whanui, my group that I am in is reading an article. The article that we are reading is called "New Zealand's Treasure Island". New Zealand's Treasure Island is made by Gordon Campbell. After we read that we have to finish three tasks to make a tic tac toe. The task I choose to do were a postcard, write a diary entry, create a movie poster and write a recount about a main part of the story. I asked my teacher to do 4 tasks because I wanted to do the first three and the last one was what we had to do. I know I am a great self-manager because when the teacher isn't here I always finish my work and I am always nice to the teacher. Even when the teacher is here I still finish my work and most of the time I know what my next steps are. If I am finished all my work I always know what to do after even if it's maths or other fast finish tasks for reading.

Music

For the past week in music, we have been doing the 1970s decade. Last week we did the 1980s decade. Each week we have to do a decade slide. On the slide, we have to put some popular genres and also some popular songs/artists. This week we had to record a song/instrument. I used a recorder to make the song. After we recorded a song/instrument we had to do some research on some New Zealand bands and artist. We had to make a copy of a slide show and put our research on there. After we did that we had to do a poster of a band or artist. I couldn't do that because I left early to do something. Here is the research I did and the decade slide for this week. Also here is a video for the 70s.

video from the slide and the 70s video.

Kiwi Innovators - The Martin Jetpack

Today in Te Ao Whanui since I finished my must do I can do the may do. Each week may do is a reading comprehension. Last week I did women voting. This week I am doing the martin jetpack. After we read the article that came with it, we have to answer some questions. Here is the answers to the questions. In his Otago garage in 1980. So no one could steal his idea or remake it before him. Space travel in vehicles with people. Manned flights first started in 1996. MK2 an Indian company that is working with the military. After we answered the questions we have to watch three videos about the jetpack. After we watch the videos we have to make a flying machine. I don't think my flying machine is the best but I did what I could. Here is a DLO I made of my flying machine.

100 Word Challenge

Today in wānanga we have to do the 100-word challenge. I went 4 words over but it doesn't matter. I don't think that my story is the best I can do but it's fine. Here is the 100 words and the picture.

It was a calm day in __( your choice)_______, everyone was outside except me. I just dyed my hair so I am now playing VR. VR is virtual reality. You can play VR on a laptop or with the headset you get. The game I am playing is very scary but it doesn’t seem like what it is called. Now that I have been playing this game for about 20 minutes.I think that the part I am at is the forest. I think that the game is very well thought out. The game is called Five Nights At Freddys Help Wanted.

New Zealand's Treasure Island

Today in hurumanu 3 the group I am in has to read a book about a treasure island. The book is called "New Zealand's Treasure Island". The book is made by Gordon Campbell. After we read the book we have to do 3 tasks to make a win on tik tac toe but we have to do the middle task. I asked the teacher if I could do 3 tasks and also the one in the middle and she said I could. The tasks I choose to do were a diary entry, postcard and a poster if the book was a movie. The middle task was to remake the main events that happened in the story.  Here is my work on the tasks.

As the waves crashed down on that ship pushing it onto the cliffs of the island. The disaster was not able to be prevented. The current was making the boat go onto the shoreline.

Date: 13 May 1866 Time: 9:35pm It was a cold day waiting to get to a remote island not far from New Zealand. When we were on the boat it was very foggy and misty. I don’t understand why I choose to do this. The only reason I joined was because I wanted the treasure but now I don’t want to do this anymore. Even though I don’t want to do this anymore, I think that this will be a cool adventure.

Hornby High School Youtube

Today in wānanga we have to watch a video made by some older kids in the school. So far the school's channel has 3 videos. The school's channel name is Hornby High School. The videos I watched were "Cooking with Lovely and Jenica" and "International Women's Day". Jenica made garlic fried rice. I think that the rice with the garlic looks nice. I think that it is cool that they are making a video about something that has been happening for a long time and tell others what they think about it. The other video is called "International Foods day". Here is the link to the channel.

Musician Biography

On Friday we started to do some research about a New Zealand Band and Artist. The Artist and Band I choose to do were Devilskin and Lorde. We got given a slide show that we have to work on. The teacher showed us an example of what it looks like. The slide show is a different shape from what it always is. The reason I choose Lorde was because I didn't like anyone else. The reason I choose Devilskin was becuase I like rock and they have good songs. Here is the slide show.

Music

Today in music we are doing the 1980s decade. Last week we did the 1990 decade. Each week we have to do a decade slide. On the slide, we have to put some popular genres and also some popular songs/artists. If we put all of them down we have to put what the fashion was like in that decade. This week we learnt what a string instrument is. To play a string instrument you have to strum/pluck the string/wire. Here are some names of string instruments. Violin, viola, guitar, cello, harp and double bass. The month is New Zealand music month. This week we got to go into the music room and play the ukulele. This week I learnt how to play a part of the ukulele. We have to tell you the parts of a ukulele. Here is a photo of what the parts are and a video of an 80s song.

Matariki

Today in Maori we are learning about Matariki. Matariki is Maori New Year for all New Zealanders. We have to tell you three facts about Matariki. There are 9 stars/sisters but there used to be 7 stars/sisters because 2 of them were faint. Matariki is a cluster of stars. Matariki has many different names around the world.

Kiwi Innovators - Woman Voting

Today in Te Ao Whanui we have to do another reading comp. The one I am doing today is Women Voting. I have done Women Voting before so this one is easy for me. After we read the article we have to answer some questions. Here is the answer to the questions. The only white land-owning man could vote. Kate Sheppard thought it was unfair that only men were allowed to vote because women were not intelligent enough. The Suffrage movement got women to be able to vote and make New Zealand first to make women vote. Australia was the second country to allow women to vote. The first Women MP was Elizabeth McCombs, and she was elected in 1993. Kate Sheppard is on the 10$ note. After we did the questions we have to make a video with 5 facts about Kate Sheppard and the suffrage movement. Here is the video.

Silde The Corner - Fast Finish

Yesterday in wānanga I finished doing my fast finish for slide the corner. The fast finish task this week was to do something you haven't done yet. Since I didn't want to do any of them, I choose to design a rally car. Here is the rally car.

School Bells

At school, we are celebrating may music month. We are celebrating it by putting some popular Nz songs/bands on our school bell. This week is Six60 and the song is "All she wrote". Last week was "Greenlight" by Lorde. This week we have to answer some questions about the song. Here are the answers.  The members of Six60 is Matiu Walters, Chris Mac, Ji Fraser, Marlon Gerbes, Eli Paewai and Hoani Matenga. The banded got formed at Dunedin in 20008. I think the song is about just living their life. I think that the music balls is nice because it's not the ringing bell.

Maths - Moanas Time

Today in maths we have to do another problem solve question because we finished last weeks one. The weeks one is about time. We have to write a paragraph about how we found out the answer. Here is the paragraph and a photo of the question. I and Alexia worked together on the problem, we decided it would be the best thing to figure out how many days were in May, may has 31 days in it, but since she set it on the last day of April it would count as one more day on 31, which means we have 32 days. We then worked our 32x11 and we got 352, this was useless but we still did it anyway. I worked out that over 7 days she will lose 1 minute and 17 seconds. We also decided that it would be better to find out how many weeks were in May and there are 4 weeks. We then did 7x4 and worked it out which is 28. We then figured out the time which we found out it was 5 minutes and 8 seconds. The ending time will be 12:54:52.

Te Ao Whanui - Pa Tuwatawata

Today in Te Ao Whanui my group jetboats had to read a book called "Pa Tuwatawata".  After we read the book we had to have a discussion but not everyone is finished reading. Since I finished reading I have to answer some questions. Here are the answers. The purpose of a Pa was they were built to protect their kainga, some Pa didn't build for permanent use but often had food stores in them. Pa offers an advantage for Maori over the British superpower. Some features of Pa is that it has houses, pits for storage, storehouses, lines of human-made stockades. Stockade is a barrier that is made out of wooden stakes that are built for defensive. Earthworks are barriers and protections moulded from the land. Rangatira is a high ranked person. Pekerangi is kind of like a wall but not really, it made out of thin manuka and tupakihi. Some of the advantages Pa offered against the British superpower were that there was a double layer of palisades made from tree trunks and harakeke padding, an underground rua connected by a network of tunnels, stepped trenches were made 1.8 meters deep and trenches provided hidden firing positions. After we did the questions we have to do another worksheet. On the sheet, we have to compare and contrast. Here is my work.

Slide The Corner - Character: Fact Or Opinion

Yesterday in Wānanga I finished reading chapter 6 - 7. After we read chapter 6 - 7 we have to do a character fact or opinion. The character we have to do is the main character, Greg. We also have to say what is the same and what is different from us. We have to make a copy of a doc and then we work on there. Here is my work.

Maths - The board

Last week we started a biteable on some maths work we did. We have to share how we worked out the maths question on biteable. I worked with a partner because if I did it alone I would not have found it out. My partner was Alexia. Here is the biteable I made.

NZ Sign Language

Today we are learning about New Zealand Sign Language. We have to read an article about NZ Sign Language. After we read the article we have to answer some questions. Here are the answers. NZSL became an official language in 20006. There was a need for NZSL because NZSL has a distinct vocabulary and grammar that has developed in the deaf community. Two facts about this are that 23,000 people in New Zealand have some knowledge of NZSL and only 3,000 - 4,000 of those people are deaf. Also, did you know what 5% of deaf children have deaf parents and acquire NZSL from birth as a native language. NZSL begins in Christchurch. After we answered the questions we have to learn our name in NZSL.

It is important to have NZSL interpreters at Jacinda Arderns speeches because if deaf people are watching and they don't have the people they won't know what she is saying. Also if deaf people don't know how to put subtitles on they also won't know. One of the good things that they could lip-read but if they don't know how to lip read and they are all alone they won't know what's happening. If anyone didn't have NZSL interpreters it would be harder for deaf people to tell what's happening.

Music

Today in music we started doing the 1990s decade. Last week we did the 2000s decade. Each week we have to do a slide about each decade. On the slide, we have to put some popular genres and also some popular songs/artists. If we put all of them down we have to put what the fashion was like in that decade. This week we learnt how to play the recorder. We went outside with the recorders and played out there so we don't annoy the other classes as much. On Wednesday we got to go into the music room and play the recorders in there. We also got to see what a clarinet and flute looks like. We also got told what a woodwind instrument is. Here are some of the names of woodwind instruments I know of. Recorder, clarinet, flute, oboe, etc. All you need to do to play a woodwind instrument is have a steady blow and you blow into or across. Here is a video of a popular song in the 90s.

Easyio

Yesterday in Te Ao Whanui we have to do another reading comprehension. The one we choose to do today is Easyio. Easyio is basically a way to make healthy yoghurt on your own without buying it from the shops. After you read the article it came with you have to answer some questions about it. Here are the answers.A science teacher named Len Light made Easyio. I think that they named it Easyio because it is easy to make yoghurt but I don't know why they put the io on the end of easy. Yoghurt does not remain healthy even if it's in the fridge in the supermarket is because the live bacteria culture deteriorates over time. Deteriorate means it becomes progressively worse. The steps to make yoghurt in the Easyio are to get the yoghurt powder mix with cold water in it, then fill the thermos with hot boiling water, and leave it on the bench overnight. The Easyio company was sold in 2010. After we did the questions we have to make our own brand of yoghurt. Here is my own brand of yoghurt.

100 Word Invention Challenge

Today I did a 100-word invention challenge. I was meant to do this last week but I thought it was something different. Here is the 100 words.

An invention I probably can’t live without is electricity, mainly because lots of people use it every day and without it, we can’t talk to our friends and family if we are away or if we need anything. I would be fine without electricity, it’s just that I won’t be able to talk/text my friends and family. Lots of people would not like it if the electricity went away because they use it every day and they cant look at the news or they can’t tell what has been happening around the world. This is why I think people can’t live without electricity.

Slide The Corner - Fast Finish

Yesterday I finished doing my work for novel study. After we finish doing out work that has been assigned to us we can do fast finish. I choose to do two things for fast finish. The fast finish tasks I choose to do were to make a canva poster of an upcoming rally and research about rally history and make a poster about it. Here are the Posters.

Slide The Corner - Chapter 3 - 5

Today I read chapter 3 - 5 on Slide The Corner. After we read chapter 3,4,5 we had to do a character table. On the character table, we had to write about the persons personal detail and their characteristic and also their relationships. The people on the table were Greg, Mum, Dad and we also could add more characters. I added Holly and Brad. I added Holly and Bard because they have been in the past 2 or 3 chapters and they have been really kind to Greg. Here is the character table.

100 Word Challenge

Today in Wānanga I did the 100-word challenge. Here is the writing and the photo.

as you know when you die you go to heaven or hell but before you go you have to walk up some stairs. While you are on the stairs there will be things happening to you and it depends on what you do. When you get up to the top the gate holder will choose if you were good while going up the stairs or if you were bad going up the stairs. If you are bad you go hell and you will do the stairs again but it will be harder. If you have more than 50% bad you go to hell.

Music

For the past week in music at the start of the period, we have been listening to music to see if we know what song it is and who made it. I think that music is something you listen to and makes you feel something. Music is types of beats, harmony, melodies, etc. My favourite song is "Ain't No Crying" by Derivakat. Ain't No Crying is a song about the Dream Smp. Derivakat is a fan of the Dream Smp and she writes songs about the people on it and some about the lore. I learnt some types of beats people use in music. Here are some of the names of beats. Beat names: semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, bass clef and treble clef.

Slide The Corner - Gregs Diary

Yesterday since I finished my work I had to do a fast finish task. There were three things I could choose out of. I did one of them last year and the other one was reading it out loud but I don't feel confident so I am not doing that one. The only other one I can do is make Greg a diary. Here is what I wrote in the diary.
Pages 12 - 15
Date 12 - 5 - 2007 Time: 6:30pm It was another day and I had to be late again. The reason I was late was that I was too bothered looking at the cars. One of the cars I really want but I can’t until I get a job. Back to being late again. Let me tell you what happens when I am late home. Most of the time I have to get to bed without dinner and I have to stay in my room sometimes if I ague I don’t get lunch that next day. I think that it is unfair because if Kitty or William are late it doesn’t matter they still get to have dinner. One of the things I liked about today was that I got into the automotive engineering course. That was a part of my day. - Greg

Jet Boats

Today in Te Ao Whanui we got into invention groups and had to research about it. The invention group I am in is jet boat. We had to figure out who created it, what is its purpose when they made it, how did they come up with the idea, how has it helped change the world. We had to put the answers on a piece of paper that has what the invention is on it. Here are the answers to the questions. The answers are not in order.

Jet boats changed the world because tourism went up. Sir William (Bill) Hamilton made jet boats. Hamilton wanted to build the boat because he wanted a boat the could navigate the shallow fast-flowing rivers where he lived. Jet boats were made in the early 1950s. It was found that the water jet was better than propellers and it was easier to go up against waves.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Bill Hamilton's full name is Sir William (Bill) Hamilton.
To do the ton means to reach 100 mph.
some things that Sir William invented were Jet boats, waterwheel and he also was tinkering with a car.
Revolutionise means to change something radically or fundamentally
I think that Jetboats are a successful invention because people still use them now.
Jetboats are used around the world as a tourism attraction
Hamilton thought that an ancient Greek named Archimedes made the Jetboat.

Stone Tools - Inventions

Today in Inventions we have to rank what is most important to us. The words that we could choose out of were a computer, stone tools, photograph, electricity, Bessemer furnace, celluloid, aeroplane, telephone, phonograph, television. Before we choose what is important to us we had to get into groups of 2,3,4. After that task the teacher made one person from the group say what we marked them as from important to least important we had to choose what we think is the most important to us. Here is why I think stone tools is the most important.

I think that stone tools are most important because if we don't have them how will we mine. If we don't have stone tools how will we get coal, stone, iron, gold and diamonds. If we never had stone tools we would not have found diamonds or gold. We also would not have the jewellery.

Math Problem Solving - Tia and Tom

Today in Maths we did a solving question, we had to work with someone else or with two other people.

The question is in the picture above.
We had to work out how long will it be before Tia has more money than a tom, we thought it would be easier if one of us would do tom and the other one would do Tia. I did Tom and Alexia did Tia.
Since Tom started spending his $20 on Monday but only using $2 a day, While Tia started work on Monday and made $2.50 a day. We started working it out and stopped on Friday. On Friday tom had $10 and Tia had $12.50 So it will take 5 days for Tia to make more money than Tom.

Slide The Corner - Chapter 1 - 2

Yesterday I read chapter 1 - 2 of Slide The Corner. After we finished reading chapter 1 - 2 we have to answer some questions. Here are the answers. Greg's dream is to be a rally car driver. He doesn't tell his parents because he doesn't want to think that he will be a failure to the family because all of his family is smart. Greg's parents punish him by making him redo the NCEA level 1 test and if he is home late he doesn't get food. When Greg comes home late his parents don't let him have dinner that night. If Greg doesn't do what they want he doesn't get food. Greg's parents don't give him anything personal in his room because his parents don't like cars and want him to be successful. Greg just goes to the garden and gets some tomato and some carrots as well. It is important for him to get a job so he can stay in the automotive engineering course and so if he is hungry he can get some food. William is the one who gives him the money before school starts. I agree and don't agree with what Mr Carmody said about Gregs dad because if he stands up for himself his dad might be a grump and if he doesn't stand up for himself he might not get what wants.

Slide The Corner

This term we are starting a novel study in Wānanga. The book I am reading is Slide The Corner. The author is Fleur Beale. Before we start reading we have to answer some questions. Here are the answers.
1.I think that the book will be about a rally because there is a car and there are two people in the car and you need two people in the car to do a rally.
2.I think that Slide The Corner means sliding around the corner.
3.I have heard about Fleur Beale. I have read one of her books. The book was Playing To Win. Fleur Beale is a New Zealand fiction writer. She used to be a teacher. The school she used to teach at was Canterbury University. She went to was Victoria University and Christchurch Teachers College to study.
4.I haven't learnt anything by reading the back of the book all I learnt is that I was right about the car that it is a rally car.
