Gold Rush

For the past 2 weeks we have been doing stuff in hurumanu 1 about Gold Rush. We had to watch videos and read article to learn about what happened. The videos we watched were called "Shantytown Heritage Park – Greymouth, West Coast, New Zealand" and "Hunter's Gold". Here are the videos link Shanty Heritage, Hunters Gold. We had to do a DLO that have 4 facts about mining and 4 facts about Chinese people in mining. Here is my work.

Chinese People
  1. In 1866 there were less than 200 chinese miners in Otago
  2. Chinese miners followed one of three major religious beliefs - Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.
  3. Some Chinese miners smoked opium before they came to New Zealand. Other miners took up the habit because they were lonely and/or hungry - opium is an appetite suppressant. It is estimated that 10% of Chinese miners were addicted to opium and 60% smoked it occasionally.
  4. During the early 1800s many people from the Guangzhou province in Southern China lived in poverty.

Mining

  1. It takes a long time to learn how to do it properly.
  2. It is very dangerous to Mine and if it's not properly checked the dirt could come collapse and fall on you and you could die if you don't have an emergency exit or get out quick enough.
  3. You need hammers and chisels with pickaxes and shovels. Minecarts are used to move ore and other materials in the process of mining. Pans are used for placer mining operations, such as gold panning.
  4. You can earn lots of money from mining but it takes time to find the gold and you need the right equipment.
